Beginner Launchpad
Day one, done right. The aircraft worth your money, the terms worth learning, and the checklist worth printing.
Sub-250g Buyer's Guide
Stay under 250 grams and recreational registration disappears. These are the three aircraft I'd hand a new pilot today.
DJI Mini 4K
The no-brainer starter: real 4K, 31 minutes of flight, and landing sensors. Buy the Fly More kit if the budget stretches.
Potensic Atom
The budget challenger — a 3-axis gimbal and surprisingly stable 4K video for the money.
DJI Flip
Full propeller guards and palm takeoff. The most forgiving airframe DJI has ever shipped for a first flight.
The Right Drone for the Job
Paid work of any kind — weddings, listings, inspections — requires your Part 107 certificate, even with a 249-gram drone. Pick the airframe for the mission. Prices are approximate street prices and change often — nobody pays me and I'm not affiliated with DJI or any store mentioned; these are simply the tools I'd deploy with.
Weddings
The 1-inch sensor eats dim receptions for breakfast, and the 70mm tele catches candid moments from a respectful distance — guests never hear you. Never fly over the crowd itself.
Real Estate
Light enough to carry all day, wide enough to sell the whole lot, and vertical mode for the agency's socials. The listing-photo workhorse.
Agriculture
The Multispectral's cameras read crop health (NDVI) invisible to the eye — stress maps before the field shows symptoms. Spraying belongs to the Agras line.
Indoor Events
DJI Neo (~$199) and Avata 2 (~$999): guarded props and tiny frames built for hallways and ballrooms. Fun fact: FAA airspace rules don't apply indoors — but the venue's rules absolutely do.
Concerts & Festivals
Flying over a crowd requires a hard-to-get FAA waiver (107.39). The pro move: park legally outside the crowd and let the 70mm telephoto bring the stage to you.
Roof & Construction
Read shingles, panels, and welds with the Air 3S telephoto instead of a ladder — or step up to a Mavic 3E (~$3,600) for thermal-style inspection work. Document progress on a schedule and the client keeps calling.
Mapping & Surveying
Mechanical shutter plus RTK positioning delivers survey-grade maps and 3D models. This is where drones stop being cameras and start being instruments.
Jargon Buster
RTF
Ready-to-Fly: everything you need is in the box. Charge, calibrate, launch.
FPV
First-person view: you fly wearing goggles, seeing exactly what the drone sees.
LAANC
Near-instant FAA authorization to fly in controlled airspace near airports.
RTH
Return-to-Home: automatic flight back to the launch point if signal is lost.
VLOS
Visual line of sight: you must see your drone with your own eyes at all times.
GIMBAL
The motorized stabilizer that keeps your footage silk-smooth in the wind.

Run it every single time. Two minutes on the ground beats a recovery swim in the Atlantic.
