Thirty years of military service, zero drone flights. Here's what my first unboxing taught me before the props ever spun.
The box on the table
I'll admit it — three decades of military service and a gray cardboard box still had me double-checking myself. The DJI Air 3S is my first drone. Not my first aircraft, but my first time being the rookie again. If you're standing where I'm standing, this one is for you.
Why I picked the Air 3S
I wanted room to grow. The Air 3S carries a 1-inch main sensor plus a 3x telephoto, full omnidirectional obstacle sensing, and 45 minutes of rated flight time. It's not the cheapest first bird — but I didn't want to outgrow my drone in a month.
What's in the box
The aircraft, folded smaller than I expected
RC 2 controller with the screen built in
One battery, spare props, cables, and the usual paperwork
That new-gear smell no checklist can prepare you for
First impressions, rookie edition
The build quality is serious. Every hinge clicks with intent. The app walked me through activation and firmware updates before it would even let me arm the motors — annoying for ten minutes, reassuring forever.
The paperwork comes first
At 724 grams, this is not a registration-free drone. FAA registration and Remote ID apply, and TRUST is mandatory for recreational pilots. My rule: the bird doesn't fly until the paperwork is done. Registration took me ten minutes online.
What's next
First flight is coming — an open field, a calm morning, and the pre-flight checklist from this site. I'll log it here, mistakes included. We're learning to fly smart, together.
