FlyDronePR // HUB 02 // RULES & SAFETY

Rules & Safety Hub

The FAA rules that actually apply to you, translated into plain language. Five minutes here saves you a four-figure fine.

FAA Registration in 3 Steps

01

Pass the TRUST

The Recreational UAS Safety Test — free, online, about 30 minutes. Keep the certificate forever; you can't fail it.

Take the TRUST — free at an official FAA provider
02

Register at FAADroneZone

$5 per drone, valid 3 years. Only required if your aircraft weighs 250g or more — sub-250g skips this step.

03

Mark Your Number

Write your registration number on the airframe. A sharpie or a label maker — done.

Emergency Actions: Flyaway, Lost Link & Crashes

Read it once now, print it for your gear bag. Calm beats panic — every time.

0/12 SYSTEMS GO

Remote ID, Demystified

What It Is

A digital license plate: your drone broadcasts its ID and location while airborne.

Who Needs It

Every registered drone — in practice, anything 250g or heavier.

How to Comply

Most DJI models from 2023 onward broadcast natively. Older drones use an add-on module.

The Big Three Rules

400 FEET

The ceiling. No exceptions, no “just this once.”

LINE OF SIGHT

If you can't see it, you're breaking the rule. FPV goggles require a visual observer.

NEVER OVER PEOPLE

Not crowded beaches, not festivals, not traffic. Full stop.

Drone Insurance: Protect the Bird & Your Wallet

Do You Need It?

The FAA doesn't require insurance — but one cracked windshield or injured bystander can cost more than ten drones. Commercial clients usually demand proof of $1M+ liability before they hire you.

Liability vs. Hull

Liability covers damage you cause to others — the one that matters most. Hull coverage repairs or replaces YOUR drone. DJI Care Refresh is hull-style protection, not liability.

ON-DEMAND

SkyWatch

Insure a single flight by the hour, or pay daily or monthly — all from your phone. Liability plus optional hull coverage for the drone itself.

ON-DEMAND

Verifly by Thimble

SkyWatch's closest rival: hourly or daily liability from an app, now part of Thimble. Solid pick for one-off missions.

BWI Aviation

Commercial Part 107 specialist: annual policies from about $475/yr with unlimited certificates of insurance — the paperwork clients ask for.
