PR Local Flying & Spots

Decades of aviation and a lifetime on this island, distilled into flight intel you won't find on the mainland forums.

Signature Spots

My personal flight map. Statuses are sample guidance — always verify live airspace before launch.

SOUTHWEST COAST

Cabo Rojo Cliffs

CLEAR

Limestone cliffs, a lighthouse, and the best golden hour on the island.

WEST COAST

Rincón Point

CLEAR

Open coast and winter swells that produce footage you'll never get tired of.

SOUTH COAST

Guánica Dry Forest

CAUTION

UNESCO biosphere reserve: keep distance from wildlife and trailheads.

LOÍZA

Piñones Boardwalk

CAUTION

Incredible food-strip shots, but SJU approaches cross overhead — watch your altitude.

RÍO GRANDE

El Yunque Trails

CAUTION

Forest flight is allowed in most areas: launch from clearings and avoid crowds.

SAN JUAN

Old San Juan

RESTRICTED

Class C shelf plus dense crowds. Admire it from across the bay in Cataño instead.

Tropical Flight Doctrine

Trade Winds

10–20 knots from the east, almost daily. Fly outbound against the wind, ride it home.

Humidity & Salt

Salt air corrodes motors in weeks, not years. Fresh-water wipe-down after every coastal flight.

Pop-Up Rain

Showers appear in minutes, May through November. If the sky darkens over the cordillera, land.

Heat

Batteries sag faster above 95°F. Shade your gear and shorten your sorties.

Hard No-Fly Warnings

Airports: SJU · BQN · PSE

Class C/D airspace — get LAANC authorization or don't fly.

Vieques & Roosevelt Roads

Military range airspace: restricted, full stop.

National Park Land

San Juan National Historic Site (El Morro grounds) prohibits drone launches.

Cruise Ports & Crowds

Never over people — and Old San Juan is all people.

Sample advisory data for illustration. Always verify live airspace in an FAA-approved app (Aloft / LAANC) before every flight.

San Juan (TJSJ)

● RESTRICTED

Class C. LAANC authorization mandatory near Luis Muñoz Marín Intl.

Aguadilla (TJBQ)

● CAUTION

Class D around Rafael Hernández Airport. Coordinate before flight.

El Yunque NF

● CAUTION

National Forest: flight generally allowed. Avoid crowds; respect wildlife.

Rincón Coast

● CLEAR

Open coastline. Watch trade winds and beachgoers; stay below 400 ft.

Culebra & Vieques

● CAUTION

Small-airport traffic and legacy range areas. Check NOTAMs first.

Old San Juan

● RESTRICTED

Dense crowds, heliport traffic, and the SJU Class C shelf. Admire from Cataño.
