Remote ID in Plain English

Remote ID in Plain English

Your drone broadcasts a digital license plate. Here's what that actually means for a hobby pilot.

The one-sentence version

Remote ID makes your drone broadcast its serial number and location while it flies — like a license plate for the sky.

Who it applies to

Every drone that requires registration (250g and up)

Sub-250g recreational drones are exempt

How to comply

Check your drone's settings for a 'Remote ID' status line. DJI models from 2023 onward broadcast natively — if yours doesn't, add-on modules cost about $30.

Why I don't fight it

Accountability keeps our airspace open. Every pilot who follows the rules makes it easier for the rest of us to keep flying.
