You can't fail TRUST — but you should understand it. Here's every topic the recreational safety test covers, in plain language.
First, breathe
TRUST — The Recreational UAS Safety Test — is free, online, takes about 30 minutes, and literally cannot be failed: wrong answers get corrected on the spot. But the material matters. These are the rules that keep you legal and keep the skies safe over Puerto Rico.
Topic 1: The core flight rules
Stay at or below 400 feet above the ground
Keep the drone within your visual line of sight
Never fly over people
Always yield to manned aircraft — see it, hear it, land
Never fly near emergency operations (fires, rescues, hurricane response)
The official recreational rules live at faa.gov/uas/recreational_flyers.
Topic 2: Registration and Remote ID
0.55 lb (250 g) or more: register online with the FAA for $5
Mark your registration number on the aircraft
Registered drones must broadcast Remote ID — a digital license plate
Registration happens at the FAA DroneZone — five minutes, five dollars.
Topic 3: Airspace awareness
Controlled airspace near airports (San Juan, Isla Grande, Aguadilla) needs LAANC authorization
The FAA retired its own B4UFLY app in 2024 — today, check airspace through an FAA-approved B4UFLY service provider like Aloft
Class G (uncontrolled) airspace is your default playground
Topic 4: Your paperwork
Carry proof of TRUST completion whenever you fly — the PDF on your phone counts
The certificate never expires
TRUST is always free — any site charging for it is a scam
