Golden Hour at Cabo Rojo

Golden Hour at Cabo Rojo

The flight plan for the best sunset shot in Puerto Rico — launch point, wind pattern, and the one mistake everyone makes.

The setup

Los Morrillos lighthouse sits on limestone cliffs at the island's southwest tip. Golden light hits the rock from 6:00 PM most of the year.

My launch point

The dirt lot past the lighthouse road — flat, open, and upwind of the cliffs. Never launch from the cliff edge itself.

The wind pattern

Trade winds come off the water at 10–15 knots. Fly out against the wind, ride it home. That order matters.

The mistake everyone makes

Chasing the sunset until the battery alarms. At Cabo Rojo the walk-back is twenty minutes over sharp rock. Land with 35% and enjoy the show from the ground.
